June 3338 - Oggunners

Highlighting the June 3338 Oggunners

As a mid-weight challenge this is a good choice. Admittedly the Oggun is getting a bit long in the teeth, and the Daemon is stronger at higher levels, but the Oggun is a strong workhorse and many maintain fairly big formations of them.

I just signed up, and was about to get my Ogguns ready when (as usual) a small crisis popped up. It had to be dealt with, and when I got back and were about to switch, the light flashed and I ended out on the plains.

However I got to the medal ceremony and saw the top winners was:
  • Div 1 224+ (27 Commanders): Shawn Wretham, Warlock (2m,8s)
  • Div 2 -223 (17 Commanders): Robert C Goetz Sr, Death`s Collector`s (2h,56m)
  • Div 3 -159 (22 Commanders): Michael Beagle, Death`s Collector`s (8h,40s)
  • Div 4 -118 (23 Commanders): Joey Goldez, Phoenix (3h,46m)
  • Div 5 -95 (16 Commanders): John Ringo, Steampunk Dragons (7h,38m)
  • Div 6 -75 (17 Commanders): Brian Wilson, Smurf War Patrol (3h,10m)
  • Div 7 -59 (12 Commanders): Ila Mari Antonsen, today and tomorrow (15m,55s)
  • Div 8 -44 (13 Commanders): Michael M Messina, Major Steel (7h,14m)
  • Div 9 -35 (19 Commanders): Douglas Rainey, Death`s Demons (18m,5s)
  • Div 10 -26 (12 Commanders): Pudlish3k, Borg (16h,20m)
  • Div 11 -17 (10 Commanders): growol, Academy (2h,45m)
  • Div 12 -11 (17 Commanders): Michael Kane, Insane Clown Posse (1m,4s)

3+6+7+2+10(1S)+5+1+4+0+0+0+0= One of the Silver and thirty-seven of the Bronze winners clearly had one or more Mechs that was over the weight limit.

Total Contestants: 203, Total medals claimed: 167 (of 180 possible)

17 fewer Commanders found it Worth their time to show up in this event than there had been in the Selfsame. Perhaps they were just tired? The Climbs lately had been pretty close together.
But even if the divisions were fairly even, we ended up sending back a total of 13 Bronzes from four divisions.

Four Golds changed hands at least once during the last half-hour. The remaining eight were all held for more than two hours.
Otherwise it seemed most of the Commanders were asleep in their cockpits, at least according to the number of medals held for more than 30 minutes in this event:

.............Silvers......Bronzes
Div 1 ....0 of 4.........3 of 10
Div 2 ....4 of 4.........9 of 10
Div 3 ....4 of 4.........8 of 10
Div 4 ....4 of 4.........8 of 10
Div 5 ....4 of 4.......10 of 10
Div 6 ....4 of 4.......10 of 10
Div 7 ....3 of 4.........6 of 7
Div 8 ....4 of 4.........8 of 8
Div 9 ....3 of 4.......10 of 10
Div 10 ..4 of 4.........7 of 7
Div 11 ..4 of 4.........5 of 5
Div 12 ..3 of 4.......10 of 10

Admittedly, Mount Olympus had close to full bore action and was freewheeling action that gave the onlookers their moneys worth over and over again. As for the rest of the tops...
There was as many new medal holders on them combined as on Mount Olympus alone. And on 5 of the tops there was no successful action at all.

At the award ceremony I managed to grab the attention of one of the winners and got a few questions answered. The winner was Ila Mari Antonsen (#959777) from today and tomorrow.

Sten Hugo Hiller
Congratulations on the win. That was your 19th Gold so far, and the 3rd where you used Ogguns?

Ila Mari Antonsen
Correct. I like the Oggun format. Those Mechs might be a bit on the slow side, and the targeting isn't that great. But they pack a mean punch and are hard to hit.

Sten Hugo Hiller
And your clan? You have been with today and tomorrow for a long time now.

Ila Mari Antonsen
Good people there! Perhaps not totally gung-ho, more like laid back, but I am really more of a casual pilot than one of those that runs all over the place doing everything, so they suit me just fine.

Sten Hugo Hiller
Laid back? Didnt you bring back some serious tonnage from the Multiverse?

Ila Mari Antonsen
Oh that. Yeah, I got sucked in there and wanted to get some good loot here. Ended up landing two of the Redeemers in addition to three other transfer Mechs.

But that was kind of different. It was more like, you know, charge in to get those rewards and don't think of the long term consequences of the choices you made.

There it made perfect sense to buy expensive Niode equipment for my Ogguns, as they were my main strike force. Here I take a longer view and try to keep in sight the bigger and better Mechs I will eventually get.

Even if Niode equipment makes a difference in the lower tonnages, the difference is mostly not big enough to justify the outlays to me. But when you look at say the 95 - 105 ton Mechs the difference is often a near doubling of capabilities.

Sten Hugo Hiller
Good observation, although having a top formation for the specialists in the war is nothing to sneeze at either.
There is a Chrono coming up, will you attend that?

Ila Mari Antonsen
Don't think so. When you win a Gold you get bumped up a division, and my main is nowhere good enough to compete against those who have 20+ levels on me, aside from the fact that they have more and heavier Mechs than me.

Sten Hugo Hiller
Well, you could enter early and perhaps get a Bronze out of early points, but as you say, a chrono is difficult for those weakest in the division.
Beside the Oggun, is there any other events you like?

Ila Mari Antonsen
All those where I can win! Well seriously, I have won the odd Mech here and there so a Single Rainbow isn't to bad, and when you get to those tonnage events that isn't specialists in the war it gets easier as many don't give say 35 ton much attention.

Sten Hugo Hiller
So it is be prepared and grab what you can, not a bad attitude to have.
If you could design another type of event for the KOTM, what would that be?

Ila Mari Antonsen
Unsure, there are so many already. But perhaps something like the Selfsame, except the Point Mech don't determine what Mech you must use, just the color. So if you use a Red Ant at point you could use other red Mechs as well; Keradon, Ignis, Inferno, Axe Bot and so on. I think if we had it we should pick our own color, but that is over my pay grade. Perhaps call it monochrome?

Sten Hugo Hiller
From your lips to the Developers ears. Anything else you would like to add?

Ila Mari Antonsen
Hmmm, should probably thank the Developers for making this game and throwing in fresh tidbits to keep it interesting. Also mention to my clan members, and especially our leader that I appreciate them being there and making every effort to give me the most of this. If any pilots are looking for a comfortable ride they could probably do worse than looking up us in the IPG (Independent Player Group)

Sten Hugo Hiller
In that case, thank you for the interview, and good luck in your career.

Ila Marie Antonsen
The same to you.

She walked off, and I wondered if I ever were that young. Well I must have been, and at that stage in my career I hadn't had a single Gold yet , so she had better prospects than me ahead.

Upcoming Event: King of the Mountain Chrono (Unlimited)
Well guys and gals, this is it. Use whatever Mechs you have and are allowed to use if you have room for them in the formation.
Remember, this is a Chrono, so signing up soonest and getting some of those early points might see you end up having a better score than those you normally struggle against.

Event ends August 24 between 1800 and 1830 New York Time.
